Both Feet In

Airs Saturdays and Sundays at 1pm. New Live shows air the first Wednesday of the month at 12 noon.

Both Feet In: Conversations With People Experiencing Homelessness is a semi-weekly program created to make the invisible visible and to give a voice to those suffering without a voice in our community. Created by Dr. Sylvia Park and John Devecka, Both Feet In debuted on Easter 2010 with great success. The program has since garnered several national awards and been part of the development of Word on the Street, Baltimore’s homeless street newspaper.

Both Feet In showcases individual stories of the homeless experience as well as those resources and allies struggling to end the problem both locally and nationally. Listeners discover that there is no one stereotype that defines homelessness, any more than one defines humanity. Accidents, medical issues, poverty, addiction, mental health and more can result in homelessness at any age. Both Feet In will enlighten you and, we hope, encourage you to make your own difference.

Our original host and developer of the program, Dr. Sylvia Park, has expanded her medical work in the community and no longer has time available for weekly programs. Various members of community homeless organizations have filled in while we sought a new permanent host. In the Spring of 2013, Bonnie Lane, herself formerly homeless, agreed to become the new voice of Both Feet In.

Bonnie experienced homelessness in Baltimore for many years, and has become a tireless advocate for the homeless. A writer, editor, activist and volunteer, Bonnie is deeply involved in both national and community issues of homelessness. She has stood in the way of attempts to evict the homeless from community camps, and in front of City Council to advocate. We know she has the right stuff to continue Both Feet In. As she says, she advocates for the homeless in the hopes that no one else shall have to share her experience.

Both Feet In has been recognized with many national awards, including:

Best of Show at the 2011 Associated Collegiate Press conference

Best Podcast at the 2011 & 2012 National Student Production Awards competition

Best Community Outreach Finalist at the 2012 National Student Production Awards

Best Podcast Finalist & Best Regularly Scheduled Program Finalist at the 2013 National Student Production Awards

Past episodes are available for download or playback in our audio archives.

We welcome our new supporting sponsor Jos. A. Bank Clothiers and thank them for providing business attire for our guests so that they may be able to acquire jobs.

Word on the Street has launched!

After many months of work, the first issue of Word on the Street is now for sale from vendors around Baltimore. The $1 cover price puts $0.75 directly into the hands of the vendors – all of whom have direct personal experience with homelessness and many of whom are writing for the paper. WLOY is proud to have been a part of the launch and to have provided funding for the entire first year’s printing costs. We had a great fundraiser on April 27 at the Cork Gallery which raised over $2500 MORE for the paper! It’s amazing to see the paper in print and even more amazing to say that there are more than 3000 copies sold already! Watch for a vendor near you. Bill can be found at the corner of York and Northern Parkway if you are coming from Loyola, and there are more around town.
